My Favorite Salad

My favorite salad is the a Nicoise Salad. It is loaded with all sorts of things. Some find this combination of ingredients to be detestable. I am on the other end of that spectrum. The depiction above is just one combination of possible ingredients (and happens to be the way Erin and I always make it). Apparently the choice of ingredients is a hot topic among people who debate salads. My friend Bruno (who writes his own food blog) ordered one of these at Masa in Los Angeles once and they basically serve it in a bucket, which seemed like a good idea.

Making Things

I’ve been making things lately. Food things, I mean. I don’t know what’s come over me. The other day, I made a bunch of sushi. This is the first time I’ve made sushi since I learned from the gurus at Noble Fish back when I was 15. The sushi turned out delicious, and I’m excited to try some new rolls. I found the website SushiDay.com and I’ve been interested in trying out some of her rolls. They’re all pretty quirky and weird, but look delicious. I’ve also been into making coffee drinks lately. Well, mainly just one kind of drink. But the big excitement was that I figured out how to make frothy milk without any fancy equipment. Just heat some milk in a ziploc container for ~1 minutes, then seal it and shake it for a minute or two, and you’re all set. Then put in some honey, black pepper, and a little bit of cinnamon. And I’m using some Zingerman’s French roast espresso. Excellent!

Another big influence lately has been the cookbook that I got for Erin, Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything Vegetarian. It’s a great book with tons of recipes, both traditional and otherwise. Every course is in here and then some. My next experiment will be making the sweet potato fries and some horseradish sauce to go with them. Other items we’ve made that we’ve enjoyed are things like grilled feta wrapped in kale, cheesy potatoes and quinoa, and other things. CHECK IT OUT.

As for non-food related creations, I’ve just been trying to catch up on GhostCaps and putting together some ideas for a comic. Nothing to write home about…

Jerky Boys

Yesterday, I tried some vegan jerky. Vegan jerky… Do you know what it was called? Primal Stick. That’s right. It was ridiculous. It was also ridiculously tasty.
